Beautiful Nanjido, Before Becoming Land of Death
This Nanjido(name of the land)used to grow peanuts ands orghum. It was full of orchids andLithospermum erythrohizon and many other flowers and used to be the resting place for the migratory bird.
However, in 1978 the land was announced as a landfill of Seoul city and during 15 years, 92000tons of waste has filled the land and there were two waste mountain that used to be 100meters tall. It was full of malodor, dust and flies. After stopping the shipment of waste, the land was filled with methane and leachate which worsened the environment, we thought no living creature can live in Nanjido.
But a few years later, we have found out ecosystem has gradually recovered, now it is on progress of safety construction for protecting the land from environmental pollution and it will be continued until year 2020. After shuting down the Nanjido landfill, Seoul city is putting all their effort to make ecosystem park around Nanjido and surrounding zone. As part of that project, last year in 2015 it has held its first garden exhibition within the park and I was the invited artist and I was given small land to create a permanently preserved garden.
