The Suncheonman National Garden

Suncheon Bay is a coastal wetland and is one of the five world-designated preservation wetlands in 2003. It was registered with RamsarConvention in 2006, and was designated as the 41stKorean Cultural Property in 2008. It is a home to Tubucaarcuata, Macrophthalmusjaponicus, bluespottedmud hopper, etc. It is also known as a winter habitat for cranes where 1,005 cranes of different kinds are watched. As the number of visitors grew, Suncheon Bay has faced serious problems such as pollution and noise caused by vehicles. Suncheon City went through a series of discussions with civilians, government officials and civic groups, and decided to move the entrance of Suncheon Bay to Suncheon Exposition, 5.2 km away from it, to preserve the area. In 2013, Suncheon Bay International Garden Expo was held for the first time. With the main theme of “Suncheon Bay, A Garden for The World”, the exposition lasted for 6 months from 20th April, 2013 in the venue of 1,112,000m2. The garden was designated as the 1st National Garden of Korea in 2015.
